A monument to Mykola Shchors lies on the ground in Kyiv, after authorities had dismantled the massive equestrian memorial to the Bolshevik military commander. It took seven hours to remove the seven-ton monument, which was erected in the Ukrainian capital nearly 70 years ago. It will be stored in a museum.

In Sydney, the temperature recorded at the city’s airport was 43.5C (110F) – the highest temperature there in December since records began in 1929.
