Europe’s top goalscorers in 2023: Marcus Rashford and Ligue 1 duo ahead of Victor Osimhen

Date:

Kylian Mbappe was the king of 2022 and he now has his sights on Marcus Rashford along with Erling Haaland. But a Man Utd striker target is in second place.

Mbappe led the 2022 top goalscorers list by six goals from the old man at Barcelona. But he could not win France the World Cup, the daft fraud.

Rashford is the early frontrunner in 2023.

The criteria: All club goals in all competitions for clubs in top five leagues.

10) Karim Benzema – Real Madrid (10 goals)
Ten goals in 15 games at the age of 35, with three in two last-16 legs against Liverpool particularly sweet for the Ballon d’Or holder.

9) Youssef En-Nesyri – Sevilla (10 goals)
All five of his La Liga goals this season have come since 2022 became 2023. Happy New Year, fella.

8) Thijs Dallinga – Toulouse (11 goals)
Us neither. He’s Dutch, he cost them about £2m in the summer and although there has been some stat-padding against lower-league French sides in the cup, there have also been seven in the league.

7) Kylian Mbappe – PSG (11 goals)
No goals in defeats to Bayern Munich and Rennes keep him well off the pace in 2023.

6) Alexandre Lacazette – Lyon (11 goals)
There was a hat-trick against Chambery to boost the numbers but this is still a 17-goal Ligue 1 season for the 31-year-old.

5) Jonathan David – Lille (12 goals)
A hat-trick in a 3-3 draw with Lyon saw the Canadian leapfrog Kylian Mbappe in the Ligue 1 top-scorers list. That’s now seven goals in his last six games for Lille.

4) Wissam Ben Yedder – Monaco (11 goals)
Twelve goals in 13 games for Ben Yedder, who needs just three more for a third successive 20-goal top-flight season.

3) Erling Haaland – Manchester City (15 goals)
Five goals v RB Leipzig and three v Burnley made it 42 for the season. In March. This is a ridiculous season from Haaland.

2) Victor Osimhen – Napoli (15 goals)
Two more goals against Torino take the Nigerian striker to 15 goals from 15 games in 2023. It’s little wonder that he is so keenly sought by every big club in Europe.

1) Marcus Rashford – Man Utd (16 goals)
Sixteen goals in 22 games for the Tories’ least favourite football personalty not named Gary Lineker. The youngest English or Man Utd player to score 25 goals in European competition is not half bad.
