Man Utd have reportedly ‘triggered contract extensions’ to keep Marcus Rashford, Diogo Dalot, Luke Shaw and Fred at the club for another year.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe! All four players were due to be out of contract in 2023 but United benefitted from having the option to automatically extend their deals by a further year until 2024.
The Red Devils have unsurprisingly decided to extend their deals by another year and they will be on the same terms as they were initially.
This gives Man Utd more security and time to negotiate long-term deals in the coming months.
The Athletic have confirmed that United have ‘triggered one-year contract extensions’ to retain Rashford, Dalot, Shaw and Fred.
It is noted that ‘the United quartet would have been free to speak to overseas clubs at the start of January if the extensions were not activated’.
The report adds that David De Gea is still due to be out of contract in 2023. United are keen to keep the goalkeeper but they want him to accept ‘lower terms’ instead of them ‘triggering a one-year extension in the £375,000-a-week contract he signed back in September 2019’.
De Gea stated in the summer that he is keen to remain at Man Utd for “more years”.
“I didn’t talk with anyone yet but of course, I would be really happy to be here for as long as they want. I want to be here for more years.”
He added: “If they let me stay here I will stay here, for sure. I’m really comfortable, really happy, and hopefully, before I leave we can win something.”
Rashford meanwhile has been in great form this season as he has looked like a player reborn under Erik ten Hag.
It initially seemed likely that he would leave in the summer after he struggled last season under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Ralf Rangnick.
The forward has been heavily linked with PSG and their president Nasser Al-Khelaifi stated earlier this month that they remain interested in him.
“He’s another player that is really amazing,” Al-Khelaifi said.
“And for free? To have Rashford for free, every club would run after him, definitely.
“We’re not hiding it, we spoke before and… interest. But the moment was not a good moment for both sides. Maybe, summer, why not?
“Today if he’s a free agent of course we can talk to him directly but we are not going to talk to him now. Let him focus on the World Cup. Then after in January, hopefully, if we’re interested we will talk to him.”
The Athletic add that ‘tying Rashford down to a new deal is now seen as the priority’.
This is while Dalot and Shaw are ‘also in line for fresh terms’.
