Liverpool cling to Tottenham as pair both take steps to £50million Prem star transfer

Date:

Liverpool and Tottenham have taken steps to the transfer of James Maddison, as both clubs have informed his representatives of their genuine interest.

It looks increasingly likely that Maddison’s future will be away from Leicester City. He’s in his fifth season at the club and has been their best player for a large part of that.

That he was directly involved in 20 league goals last season reinforced that status. This term, he’s been in a similar vein of form – notching nine goals and six assists in 22 appearances.

He’s outscored everybody at the club from the midfield, aside from Harvey Barnes. Maddison’s stellar form has meant suitors have begun to line up.

Interest from Tottenham and Newcastle United has been reported for a while. Liverpool have recently thrown their hat in the ring – little wonder given their poor form this term.

Spurs are said to be in the lead currently, as per The Telegraph, though they don’t give a reason as to why that is.

Despite that, Liverpool are clinging on. Both sides might find themselves in a battle for the attacking-midfielder’s signature, if a fresh report is anything to go by.

Indeed, 90min reports both sides have ‘informed Maddison’s representatives’ that they are interested in signing him ‘this summer’.

Despite Spurs apparently being in the lead, Liverpool don’t look likely to roll over. It’s little wonder why they’d not want to let the chance of signing the star go easily.

They’ve had a very poor season by their own standards, and are currently eighth in the Premier League. It appears a freshening up of the squad is needed, with a number of ageing players taking up spots.

As such, Maddison, a 26-year-old with a great couple of seasons behind him, seems a perfect addition. 90min suggests Leicester would accept £50million for Maddison.

Both Liverpool and Spurs should be able to pay that without problem. As such, the decision might come down to Maddison himself.

On current form, Tottenham – three places and seven points better off than the Reds – would seem the best course of action.

However, Jurgen Klopp’s side aren’t likely to remain dormant for long. A couple of decent additions and they could be fighting for the title again very soon.

With that being said, it might be a hard decision to come to – either way, Maddison is likely to be playing for a top side by next season.
