An Air Canada flight headed from Las Vegas to Toronto was forced to detour and land in Iowa on Wednesday, a spokesperson for Des Moines International Airport says.

Air Canada Flight 1702 was diverted to Des Moines “out of an abundance of caution” after the smell of smoke was detected in the flight deck, Air Canada said in an email on Wednesday.

“The A321 aircraft landed normally and as per standard procedure, was immediately evaluated after landing by airport response teams, and then cleared to taxi to the gate,” Air Canada said.

There were 176 passengers on board and no reported injuries, it added.

Sarah Hoodjer, spokesperson for Des Moines International Airport, told CBC News that the plane landed safely around 4 p.m. and the passengers deplaned.

Air Canada is making arrangements for another aircraft to arrive on Wednesday night to transport the passengers to Toronto.

Hoodjer said the aircraft will be evaluated.
