Arsenal blow as £80m target Moises Caicedo pens new long-term Brighton contract until 2027

Date:

Moises Caicedo has penned a new long-term Brighton contract that runs until 2027 after he was targeted by Arsenal during the January transfer window.

The Seagulls also have an option for a further year on Caicedo, who has made a big impact for the Premier League club since making his debut last April.

Brighton head coach Roberto De Zerbi told the club’s official website: “This is a fantastic news for the club, our fans, for me and most importantly for Moises.

“It will make us stronger as we move forward towards our targets on the pitch.”

Caicedo joined Brighton from Ecuadorian club from Independiente del Valle in February 2021.

The 21-year-old was the subject of two bids from Arsenal in the January transfer window, while Chelsea were also reportedly interested.

Caicedo told Brighton that he wished to leave in an open letter posted on social media, but he remained on the south coast and has now made 29 Premier League appearances for the Seagulls.

Speaking last month, De Zerbi remained coy when asked whether Caicedo will remain at Brighton beyond this season.

“I was always honest and clear with you and I want to also be this time honest and clear,” said Albion head coach De Zerbi.

“I am very happy Moises stays with us until the end of the season.

“I want to speak to our fans because I want them to support him. I don’t want them to criticise him. I love Moises, the people who work inside of Brighton love Moises, he’s a good guy.

“I don’t know if he made a mistake or not but the transfer market is closed and the fans must follow me because I take responsibility for him. And if I say something so clear about Moises, they have to believe in me.”

Arsenal legend Emmanuel Petit has encouraged them to sign Caicedo or Alexis Mac Allister along with Declan Rice.

“I’m also still a big fan of Mac Allister and Caicedo from Brighton, since I first saw them play. I know Arsenal won’t try and buy them all, but they would also fit next to Rice really well,” Petit said.

“It also wouldn’t be much of a big move, geographically, for Rice as he is located in London with West Ham, so the move won’t hurt too much.

“But with all due respect to West Ham, it is time for Rice to go.

“It reminds me of Lampard when he first left West Ham and went to Chelsea and look what he achieved for himself. He became one of the best midfielders in the world at Chelsea. Rice should follow his example and leave given Arsenal are ready to buy him.”
