: Twitter moving TweetDeck behind paywall, for verified users only

Date:

TweetDeck, the popular Twitter viewing tool, will be put behind a paywall and available only for verified users starting next month.

In a tweet late Monday, Twitter said it has “just launched a new, improved version of TweetDeck,” and that “In 30 days, users must be Verified to access TweetDeck.”

That will leave it accessible only to Twitter Blue subscribers — who pay $8 a month — or, apparently, users who have otherwise been granted a blue checkmark.

It will also likely be the death knell of TweetDeck, which was particularly popular among power users. The app lost much of its functionality over the weekend after Twitter owner Elon Musk announced restrictions on the number of tweets that users could view each day, though Monday’s update supposedly fixed those issues.

Reaction on Twitter was swift and nearly unanimous in opposition to the move, with one user calling it “basically the nail in the coffin for me.”

When asked for further information Monday, Twitter replied only with a poop emoji — the company’s default response to all queries since it fired its media relations staff.
